STEP BY STEP THROUGH THE MASS

The Liturgy of the Eucharist (Part 5)

When the priest (or deacon) prepares the Chalice at the Altar the Church requires him to add a very small drop of water to the wine. This is an ancient custom. We have, for example, references to it from the 2$^{nd}$ and 3$^{rd}$ Century writings of several Church Fathers. As the water is added the following words are spoken quietly, almost inaudibly: "By the mystery of this water and wine, may we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity." While these words are not heard by the congregation – it might be important for us to understand the words and the act of mixing ('co-mingling') the wine and water that will become the Blood of Christ for us in the Mass.

In the 3$^{rd}$ Century, St. Cyprian, explaining why Wine and Water are used, had this to say: "Because Christ bore us all, in that he bore our sins, we see that by the water, people are signified, while in the wine, indeed, the blood of Christ is shown. And when the water is mixed with the wine in the cup, the people are made one with Christ." What this means is that the wine represents Christ (and his Blood) while the water represents us who are members of Christ Body by virtue of our baptism. The mixing of the water into the wine symbolises the intimate union of the faithful with Jesus and this union is to be so strong and complete that nothing should be able to reverse it. The few drops of water are 'lost' in the wine and can never be retrieved. What is human is swept up in what is Divine. At this point of the Mass, we might take a moment to unite the offering of our lives to Jesus' offering of himself – our hearts united with his. Soon we will be invited to "lift up your hearts". If they are united to the Heart of Jesus, they are lifted to the heights of heaven itself – into the very presence of God the Father.

The further symbolism of this action is that in Christ Jesus the Divine and Human have come together in an everlasting union. Jesus, at his Incarnation (his becoming human in the womb of Mary) brought together the Second Person of the Trinity with a Human Nature. He is fully God and fully Man – in a union of those two natures that will never be separated for all eternity. In his Incarnation, God the Son has united himself with our lowly human nature in an irrevocable act of humility – God becomes one of us – thereby elevating our human nature to an infinitely high status – for one of us (Christ Jesus) sits upon the Throne of the Most High God. He does this so that we too might live and reign with him forever in that same glory. As an early Bishop of the Church (St. Irenaeus) puts it: "The Son of God became the Son of man: so that man, by entering into communion with the Word and thus receiving divine sonship, might become a son of God." This is what the short prayer spoken at the co-mingling of water and wine is alluding to – God humbly took our human nature, and in exchange allows us to share in his exalted Divine nature, what the prayer calls "share in the Divinity of Christ". Not that we become God, but that we become like God, in whose image and likeness we were created.

We have a hive of Native Irish Honeybees under the roof of St. Baithin's. A bee expert has assured us that they pose no stinging threat as they are quite docile. Some have gotten trapped within the church building – hence the buzzing noise. They are a protected species, so great care must be taken when relocating them. Given where they are this will not be a simple task. We hope to have this done in a few weeks.

Items for the Parish Newsletter must be submitted to the Parish office no later than 12 Noon on a Thursday to be considered for the Newsletter

PLEASE NOTE that the Parish Office will be CLOSED this week for Annual Holidays. Any Newsletter Items should be given this week VIA EMAIL ONLY, before Thursday Afternoon. From Father's Desk

Matthew 14:13-21 - Compassion That Multiplies

In this familiar account of the feeding of the five

thousand, Jesus responds to the crowds not with

frustration but with compassion. Though He had

sought a quiet place after hearing of John the Baptist's

death, He welcomed the people, healed their sick,

and met their hunger.

When the disciples saw only five loaves and two fish,

Jesus saw an opportunity for God's abundance to be

revealed. He invited the disciples to bring what little

they had, blessed it, and used it to feed everyone pre-

sent - with twelve baskets left over.

This passage reminds us that Christ is attentive to both

our spiritual and practical needs. It also encourages

us not to underestimate what God can do with the

small offerings we place in His hands. When we bring

our time, gifts, resources, and willingness to serve,

Jesus can multiply them for the blessing of many.

May we trust Him to provide, serve others with

compassion, and offer what we have

- however small - into His hands.

Mary's Meals

If you have any old notes or coins that you wish to

donate to Mary's Meals they can be dropped off at

Centra Supermarket, Ballyshannon, on Tuesday, 11th

August, between 9.30 and 17.30. Otherwise collection

can be arranged by contacting Eilis Conneely on

087 7060457. Mary's Meals provide daily school

dinners in some of the world's poorest communities.

Mary's Meals are happy to announce the launch of their

sponsored walk, Step by Step to Feed the Next Child.

They have eight walks across Ireland, starting on 7th

August and all arriving in Knock, Co. Mayo on 15th

August. The Donegal Mary's Meals Group will begin

their walk in Malin Town. You are invited to join in

any part of the walk. Mary's Meals are looking for

AN NAOÚ DOMHNACH DÉAG A AN CHÉAD LÉACHT

Sliocht as céad leabhar na Ríthe. 19:9, 11-13.

Nuair a shroich Éilias Hóréb, sliabh Dé, chuaigh sé isteach san uaimh agus chaith an oíche ansin. Tháinig focal an Tiarna chuige á rá: “Gabh amach agus seas ar an sliabh os comhair an Tiarna.” Chuaigh an Tiarna é féin thart ansin. Tháinig gaoth láidir, comh tréan sin gur réab sí na sléibhte agus go ndéarna sí smionagar de na carraigeacha roimh an Tiarna. Ach ní raibh an Tiarna sa ghaoth. I ndiaidh na gaoithe tháinig crith talún. Ach ní raibh an Tiarna sa chrith talún. I ndiaidh an chrith talún tháinig tine. Ach ní raibh an Tiarna sa tine. I ndiaidh na tine tháinig fuaim gaoithe a bhí mín, séimh. Nuiar a chuala Éilias an fuaim sin, chlúdaigh sé a aghaidh lena chlóca; chuaigh sé amach agus sheas ar an bhealach isteach chun na huaimhe.

Briathar an Tiarna. FR. Buíochas do Dhia.

FREAGRA AN tSAILM

Taispeáin dúinn, a Thiarna, do thrócaire, agus tabhair dúinn do shlánú,

AN DARA LÉACHT

Sliocht as litir Naomh Pól chuig na Rómhánaigh.

9:1-5.

A bhráithre, tá mé ag insint na firinne i bhfianaise Chríost agus tá mo choinsias á dhearbhú dom i bhfianaise an Spíoraid Naoimh nach aon bhréag dom a rá go bhfuil brón mór agus buaireamh síoraí i mo chroí. Níor mhiste liom a bheith faoi mhallacht Dé agus scartha go deo ó Chríost ar son muintir mo chine féin. Isráélitigh iad, is leosan an ceart a bheith ina gclann Dé. Is leo an ghlóir, na conarthaí, an reacht, an liotúirge agus na gealltanais; is leo na paitriairc agus is díobh an Críost sa mhéid gur duine é - an té atá ina Dhia ar an uile ní, moladh go deo leis. Amen

Briathar an Tiarna. FR. Buíochas do Dhia.

ALLELUIA

Alleluia, alleluia!

Thug mé cairde oraibh, a deir an Tiarna, óir gach rud ar chuala mé ó m'Athair, chuir mé in iúl daoibh é.

Alleluia!

SOISCÉAL

Sliocht as an Soiscéal naofa de réir Naomh Maitiú.

14:22-33.

San am sin chuir Íosa d'fhiacha ar na deisceahail dul ar bord agus imeacht roimhe go dtí an taobh eile den uisce, go dtí go gcuireadh sé na sluaite ar shúil. Nuair a bhí siad curtha ar shiúl aige, chuaigh sé suas ar an tsliabh leis féin chun guí. Nuair a bhí an tráthnóna ann

Page 9

bhí sé ansin leis féin, ach bhí an bád i lár na farraige dá chaitheamh anonn agus anall ag tonnaí, óir bhí an ghaoth ina haghaidh. San ceathrú faire den oíche, tháinig sé chucu ag siúl ar an fharraige. Nuair a chonaic na deisceabail é, agus é ag siúl ar an fharraige, scanraidh siad agus dúirt: “Is samhailt atá ann!” agus lig siad uaill astu le h-eagla. Labhair Íosa leo láithreach: “Bíodh misneach agaibh,” ar seisean, “mise atá ann, ná bíodh eagla oraibh.” D’fhreagair Peadar é: “A Thiarna, más tú atá ann, ordaigh mé theacht chugat ar bharr an uisce.” Dúirt Íosa: “Tar!”. Tháinig Peadar amach as an bhád agus shiúil ar bharr an uisce ag déanamh ar Íosa, ach nuair a chonaic sé comh láidir agus a bhí an ghaoth, bhuail eagla é. Nuair a thoisigh sé ag dul faoi uisce, scairt sé, ag rá: “A Thiarna, sábháil mé!” Ar an bhomaite shín Íosa amach a lámh agus ag breith greim air dúirt: “A fhir an bheagán creidimh, cad chuige a dtáinig amhras ort?” Ar dul isteach sa bhád dóibh, thit an ghaoth. Ansin tháinig na daoine a bhí san bhád agus d’umhlaigh siad síos ina láthair ag rá: “Go dearfa, is tú Mac Dé.”

Soiscéal an Tiarna. FR. Moladh duit, a Chríost.

Reflection

It's never easy to keep faith, but to hold on to it in stormy times, as many people are going through at present is particularly difficult. Today's Scripture readings encourage us not to lose heart, or give in to despondency, but to trust in the Lord who is with us even when we are unaware of his presence.

'Courage! It is I! Do not be afraid'. These are the same words Jesus speaks to us today as we sail on the uncertain sea of life. He does not promise us a storm free voyage, but he does promise to be always there for us. The example of Peter teaches us that, to stay afloat on the sea of life, we need to fix our gaze on Jesus, not on the surging waves around us, or on the fears and doubts that well up in our hearts.

Today's gospel invites us to deepen our faith and to maintain our focus on Jesus.

In stormy times, there is always a tendency for us to retreat to a cave like Elijah, or to seek out some safe harbour, far from the stormy seas. But clearly that is not what Jesus wants. In today's gospel, Matthew tells us that Jesus 'made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side' (Mt 14:22). On another occasion, he tells Peter not to hesitate but to 'launch out into the deep' (Lk 5:4). Jesus was calling his disciples, as he is calling us today, to join him in the greatest adventure known to human history: the realisation of God's dream of a world transformed by the power of love. And, irrespective of what storms we encounter, we shall not fail, because Jesus is always with us.

Donegal Pro Life Church Gate Collection

Donegal Pro Life Church Gate Collection will take place on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th August countywide. All support is greatly appreciated. Last month, Dail Eireann voted by 86 votes to 70 to advance a Bill that would remove the three-day or 72-hour waiting period between a mother seeing her GP and proceeding with an abortion. This waiting period creates a small but vital space for the mother to reconsider her decision and thereby save the life of her unborn child. We know that the waiting period has saved lives, because between 2019 and 2024 more than 10,000 expectant mothers did not proceed with an abortion. That number, having contacted their GP and begun the abortion process, did not return after the three-day period had elapsed. Two of the 86 TDs who voted to remove the three-day waiting period are from our constituency. We voted for them. You and I must now persuade them to change their minds before the Bill returns to the Dail in the Autumn for the final vote. It is the least that mothers and their unborn children deserve.

The 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time focuses on God's patience, mercy, and the

growth of His kingdom. The readings show how God gives people time to

change and how His kingdom grows in unexpected ways. Let us pray the

following prayer this week:

Lord Jesus, plant your Word in our hearts and make it fruitful in our lives. Keep

us free from sin and make us a fertile place where your love can grow. Let the

Word which you have planted in our hearts not return to you void, but may it

provide a rich harvest, a hundred, or fifty, or thirty-fold. Amen

What do we live for, if it is not to make life less difficult for each other?

Anytime we step out boldly to make changes, we take a chance that we might fail. But the only way to get better is to try.
