Graveyard Refuse Disposal

From the Month of September 2026 onwards Parishioners are asked to take home and dispose of their decayed wreaths and dead flowers as it has been decided that the facility for the disposal of such. i.e., bins will no longer be in use.

The Deep End • Alone Time

Earlier this year I read a selection of entries for a Mother’s Day competition, in which sons and daughters described why their mother deserved the prize. The entries had several themes in common – She never does anything for herself; she’s always thinking of other people; I can’t remember when she last had a break.

In today’s Gospel it is Jesus who needs a break. It is a very human Jesus that we encounter. Having learnt of the death of John the Baptist, Jesus withdraws from the crowds in a boat to a ‘deserted place’. Like any of us, he feels the need to be alone from time to time, and this is a time of particular pressure for him. He has been preaching solidly for some time, Herod is asking questions, and now he hears his cousin John has been killed.

But there is little time for rest. Seeing the crowds that follow him, Jesus feels

another very human emotion – pity. The disciples are protective of Jesus and want the people to go away, but Jesus has other ideas. It is a compassionate Jesus who addresses the hunger of his large crowd of followers.

While he needs time to reflect and pray, and we can only imagine how tired and weary he feels, he is happy to postpone his own needs it while he cares for his flock. It’s an example followed by many a parent. But it is interesting to note what follows the story of the feeding of the five thousand. Having dismissed the crowds, Jesus makes another attempt to retreat by himself, this time up a mountain. His alone time is important.

Prayers of the Angel

“My God, I believe, I adore, I hope and love You! I ask pardon of You for all those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope and do not love You!”

“Most Holy Trinity; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, I adore You profoundly, and I offer You the most precious Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all tabernacles of the world, in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges and indifferences with which He Himself is offended. And, through the infinite merits of His most Sacred Heart, and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg of You the conversion of poor sinners.”

Reflection

Dear Lord, here lie in their last rest,

the people who worked on the land.

They knew the meaning of hard work.

They knew the joy and peace that is the product of labour.

Now we trust they know the peace and happiness of everlasting life with You.

These people all their lives long

laboured to supply the food and drink necessary

to sustain human life.

Now they enjoy in all its fullness the life that You, Lord,

came down to earth to give us.

Dear Lord, bless us who labour now in the fields and hills

where these dear dead have worked.

Grant that we may remember them with charity and kindness,

walking reverently in the ways that they have left behind.

Grant, too, that we may finally meet again.

Matthew 14:13-21 - Compassion That Multiplies

In this familiar account of the feeding of the five

thousand, Jesus responds to the crowds not with

frustration but with compassion. Though He had

sought a quiet place after hearing of John the Baptist's

death, He welcomed the people, healed their sick,

and met their hunger.

When the disciples saw only five loaves and two fish,

Jesus saw an opportunity for God's abundance to be

revealed. He invited the disciples to bring what little

they had, blessed it, and used it to feed everyone pre-

sent - with twelve baskets left over.

This passage reminds us that Christ is attentive to both

our spiritual and practical needs. It also encourages

us not to underestimate what God can do with the

small offerings we place in His hands. When we bring

our time, gifts, resources, and willingness to serve,

Jesus can multiply them for the blessing of many.

May we trust Him to provide, serve others with

compassion, and offer what we have

- however small - into His hands.

A Thought from Anne Frank (Holocaust Victim)

In spite of everything

I still believe that people are really good at heart.

I simply can't build up my hopes

on a foundation consisting of

confusion, misery and death.

I see the world gradually

being turned into a wilderness,

I hear the ever approaching

thunder,

which will destroy us too,

I can feel the sufferings of

millions and yet,

if I look up into the heavens,

I think that it will all come right,

that this cruelty too will end,

and that peace and tranquillity will return again.

Entrance Hymn: Canticle of the Sun

The heavens are telling the glory of God,

And all creation is shouting for joy.

Come, dance in the forest,

Come, play in the field, and sing -

Sing to the glory of the Lord.

Sing to the sun, the bringer of day,

He carries the light of the Lord in his rays.

The moon and the stars who light up the way

Unto your throne. (Chorus)

Praise to the wind, that blows through the trees.

The seas mighty storms, the gentlest breeze.

They blow where they will,

They blow where they please -

To please the Lord. (Chorus)

Final Hymn: Holy Mary Full of Grace

When creation was begun

God has chosen you to be

Mother of his blessed Son,

Holy Mary, full of grace.

Ave, Ave, Ave, Maria.

When creation was restored

You were there beside the Lord

Whom you cherished and adored,

Holy Mary, full of grace.

Ave, Ave, Ave, Maria.

Praise the Father and the Son

And the Spirit, three in one,

As it was when time begun,

Now and evermore, Amen

Ave, Ave, Ave, Maria.

Graveyard Mass Thanks

The weather was kind to us as we celebrated the

Graveyard Mass on Friday 24th July at 7pm.

By common consensus, the largest congregation

ever was present and the graveyard was in

immaculate condition. Our sincere thanks to

everyone for their attendance, participation and

help. A huge effort was made in caring for the

graves of loved ones for this celebration of

remembrance, honouring the memory of those

whose resting place is St Mary's Graveyard,

entrusting them to God's eternal care in heaven, as

they continue to hold a special place in our hearts.

Special thanks to the men from Killybegs

Community Employment for having the graveyard

in such great order and to the Murphy family.

We are grateful to: Fr Michael McKeever for

concelebrating, the Ministers of the Word,

Ministers of the Eucharist, Collectors, Altar Servers/

Wreath Bearers, Gift Bearers, our Sacristan

Patricia O'Boyle, Parish Secretary Ann O'Donnell

who coordinated the event and the choir. The Parish

Choir made such a special effort, their music and

singing adding so much to the celebration.

Thanks to Brid Murphy for renewing the Scathlán

flowerbed and the Children's Garden of

Remembrance, to Hugo Murrin for his help, to

James, Hubert, Thomas & Johnny Paul and all who

helped with chairs and furniture and to McBrearty

Funeral Directors for the stools. Thanks to Darren

from Reynolds of Raphoe for the PA System.

Thanks to Plunkett Smith who is always present,

keeping a valuable record of events.

May the women, men and children who are laid to

rest in St Mary's Graveyard enjoy the love, joy and

peace of heaven and continue to be close to us.

May they Rest In Peace. Suaimhneas Siorai.

STEP BY STEP THROUGH THE MASS

The Liturgy of the Eucharist (Part 4)

As the priest makes the offertory gifts ready on the Altar, this action is accompanied by several prayers of offering; to which the faithful respond: "Blessed be God forever". In those prayers the priest refers to the fact that the bread and the wine are fruits of the earth and the work of human hands. In other words, the prayer acknowledges that God did not create bread and he did not create wine – though of course he could have easily done so. Bread and Wine are things which human beings have created using the God-given raw materials of sun, soil, rain, wheat, water, fire, grapes and the microbiology processes responsible for fermentation. Of course, the intelligence which led human beings to 'create' bread and wine is itself a gift of God. The point being made in these prayers is that the bread and wine offered for the Eucharist is a combined effort of the Divine and the Human – though obviously the Divine has primacy and is the foundation of all that results. The ordinary bread is destined, in this Mass, to become the "Bread of Life"; the wine placed in the chalice is destined to become "our spiritual drink."

These prayer by the priest can often be said in a quiet voice – especially when there is an accompanying hymn. However, even without a hymn, the priest may opt to say these prayers quietly. This has the advantage of giving the faithful the opportunity to quietly place their hearts spiritually upon the altar and into the chalice – uniting themselves with Christ Jesus and his offering of himself to the Father on Calvary for the good of all souls for all time – a once for all offering and sacrifice which is made sacramentally, though really, present in this particular Mass.

One small ritual action that can be easily missed at this Preparation of the Gifts is the additional of a small drop of water to the wine in the chalice. The water is added in a very small, almost insignificant, drop or two. As it drops into the wine it is assumed into the wine and is so insignificant that it makes no material difference to the quantity nor the quality of the wine. However, this ancient custom, is far from insignificant. Next week we will look at this ritual action, and accompanying prayer, to unpack some of its enormous significance for us who are trying to prayerfully and attentively participate in the Mass.
